Math Rock. A genre some people might automatically recoil from based on the name, alone, but they’d really be doing themselves a disservice. Math Rock is about complexity and precision, and is very similar to Prog in that sense. This article states that the key difference is in the typical song structure for each genre - Prog, while still complex, is a bit more linear.
Honestly, that makes a bit of sense - the prog bands I follow closely always feel like they know where they’re going. This album from Covet, “Catharsis”,…well, it’s a jam session, by-and-large.
Covet is a three-member band from California, led by Yvette Young, an incredibly talented musical prodigy from an intensely musical family. The band is, nominally, just guitar, bass, and drum, though they do pull in other instruments, such as violin, piano, and saxophone, on occasion.
And their music is incredibly precise. Nothing off-beat, nothing out of sync or mildly off-pitch. The only vocals are vocalizations. They remind me, firmly, of Elder, another jam band I enjoy, though Elder leans into Prog Metal territory and has been increasing the presence of vocals with their last album.
There’s nothing truly outstanding, thematically or otherwise, on this album. It’s just…*solid.* Good, relaxing, competent rock instrumental music. Really enjoyable, and definitely going straight on my working playlist. It’s just shy of 30 minutes in length. If there was a bit more meat, maybe an epic-length track to really push the musicians to their limits, it might be worthy of bumping to Blue. As it is, I definitely recommend this one who wants some easy rock vibes, and there are no misses to speak of.
